Thing #5
On Techlearning I found a blog titled The Ideal School Library. This particular blog was of interest to me because I will be a new librarian this coming school year. I don't think many of the contributors were librarians though, or at least not elementary librarians. The responses were critical of library media specialists. I agree to be called a "media specialist" you must be knowledgeable of technology more than most. However, the resources have to be available and there has to be a buy in of the use of the technology by the whole campus. Thank goodness I am taking this class. I don't want to be one of the librarians people complain about.

Don't fret just yet; you're going the extra mile. It will be quite difficult for anyone to complain about someone who is getting a head start on her learning curve! With things changing so rapidly we are fortunate to work in a district willing and eager to support the learning we need to be more qualified for our work! You're already ahead of where I was this time last year. Welcome aboard!
ReplyDeleteYou found the latest debate among school library professionals! Many folks are asking the question: do we need school librarians when people can just go online to get the answers they once needed a librarian for? My answer is that if all the school librarian is doing is checking out books, then no - a paraprofessional can do that. If the librarian is involved in teaching kids how to navigate and evaluate and do something with the information they find, then YES - we DO need that kind of librarian in a 21st century school!
